You might think you know everything there is to know about your iPhone – but that handset is capable of a lot more than it appears.
Many users were surprised by the news, for example, that there is a secret button on the back of the phone.
The button has been a feature on the iPhone for many years, but the video has thousands of comments from people who never knew it existed.
This mind-blowing discovery has left us all asking – what else can our iPhones do?
Here’s a few tricks and codes you might like to try out…
14 Secret iPhone tricks and codes
1. Want your phone to charge faster? Stick it on Airplane Mode while you’re doing so, as it will pause background activity such as GPS roaming and notifications – all of which can contribute to draining your battery.
2. If you’re in need of more storage space on your phone, hold down the power button until you see the screen to switch the phone off, then hold down your ‘home’ button. This will in turn clean our your phone’s RAM memory – thus reducing the amount of space your apps might be occupying.
3. Want to remain anonymous when making a call? If your mobile phone provider supports hiding your caller ID, you can do so by entering the code *31# before dialling the number.
4. Likewise, if you want to divert calls to another number, key in *21*, followed by the phone number and the # symbol, in order for calls to go to the number you want. You then key in #21# followed by the number, to disable the call divert.
5. Annoyed with Siri because she has pronounced your friend’s name wrong? Then tell her ‘That’s not how you pronounce…’ She will ask you for the correct way to say the word, and will then get it right next time.
6. Not every photo on your phone is an Instagram-worthy masterpiece – but you can hide pics if you’re not so keen on them.
To do so, simply Launch the photos app, tap the album where the photo is located, then tap the select button in the top right-hand corner, select the photos you want hidden, and tap the ‘share’ button at the bottom left-hand corner.
This will bring up a menu of options, one of which is ‘hide photo’. Simply select that, and the snap you want will be hidden, without actually being deleted.
7. Did you know that your iPhone knows everywhere that you’ve been? Simply go to Settings and choose Privacy, Location Services, System Services, and Frequent Locations – and it will bring up an option called Significant Locations – which will show you all the places you’ve visited, as well as how long you spent there.
If you’d rather not have this active, you can toggle the option off – and get rid of the location information by clearing your history.
8. If you like to fall asleep listening to music – or you only want to listen for a certain amount of time – you can set the timer to stop the tunes whenever you want them. Simply go to Clock, Timer, and select the Stop Playing option, then choose the time of your choice – and the music on your phone will stop playing when the timer runs out.
9. No spirit level? No problem! Did you know you can use your iPhone as a spirit level and a tape measure, should you need one? To access this feature, simply open up the phone’s ‘Measure’ app, and you’ll find both lurking within.
10. If you want to erase part of a text message quickly without having to rely on the ‘back’ button, there’s a very easy way to do it – simply shake your handset, and tap ‘Undo typing’, and it will be done for you. Want the text back? Do the same thing, except this time select the ‘redo typing’ option.
11. Did you know you can add captions to any photos in your camera roll? And it couldn’t be easier to do so – simply swipe upwards on any image, and you’ll get an option to add a caption or keywords.
12. Want to check you’re not overusing your iPhone allowance? Simply key in the code *646#, and it’ll tell you how many minutes you have left.
13. If you want to try and get yourself a better signal on your iPhone, you can always stick it in Field Test Mode. Do this by entering the code *3001#12345# and tapping the ‘call’ button. It will bring up a menu of options, but the little number in the top left-hand corner – which should be anything from -40 to -130 – will give you an indication of how good your signal is, obviously the higher the better.
14. If you’re using the calculator and you make a mistake, it may be tempting to press the C or AC button and start the whole calculation all over again. Instead, try swiping left or right to delete your error – and it’ll be gone, with the calculator saving the rest of your work.
