There are concerns that the combination of Covid-19 and flu could overwhelm the NHS, particularly as the UK’s Covid infection rate soars to its highest point since July.
More than 40 million people across the UK – 35 million in England alone – are being offered a flu jab this year in the biggest flu vaccination campaign ever.
This is alongside over-50s and younger adults with health conditions being offered a Covid booster jab across autumn and winter.
A report from the Academy of Medical Sciences suggested the UK could see as many as 60,000 flu deaths this winter, so getting jabbed is integral.
But how much will the shot set you back, and where can you get the cheapest jab?
How much does the flu jab cost at Boots?
The Boots flu jab is free for eligible groups, and £14.99 for everyone else.
The following groups are eligible for a free flu jab this winter:
- Aged six months to under 50 years in clinical risk groups
- Pregnant
- Aged 50 years and over
- In residential care
- Unpaid carer
- Close contacts of people with weakened immune systems
- Health and care staff
Children are also eligible for the flu vaccine, although will receive it in the form of a nasal spray.
Those who are eligible include:
- All children who are aged two and three on August 31, 2021.
- All children in primary school and all secondary school pupils under the age of 16 on August 31, 2021.
If your child is over the age of six months and has a long-term health condition, or if they are between two to three years old, they will also be eligible for a free flu jab.
GP surgeries will contact patients eligible for the free NHS flu vaccine.
Eligible people can also book an appointment through a pharmacy, such as Boots.
You can book a flu vaccine with Boots on their website.
Many places of work also offer subsidised jabs for their staff – so it’s worth asking if yours does this.
