A massive manhunt for Brian Laundrie, the only person of interest in his fiancé Gabby Petito’s death, has led to authorities finding the bodies of at least five missing people.
The bodies of several people who vanished and received far less media coverage compared to Gabby, have been discovered during the more than month-long search for Laundrie. They have been found in areas where Laundrie, 23, was rumored to be hiding and places where he and Gabby traveled together by van.
On October 9, the body of Sara Bayard, 55, was discovered off a highway in El Paso County, Colorado. It was an area where Laundrie and Gabby had shared photos on Instagram.
The body of Josue Calderon, 33, was also found on October 9 at the Yadkin Valley Overlook in North Carolina as rumors circulated that Laundrie was hiding there. Investigators said Calderon was stabbed to death and that there was no connection.
On September 28, the body of Robert ‘Bob’ Lowery, 46, was found on the Black Canyon Trail near Gabby’s remains. The Texas father died by a self-inflicted gunshot to his head, a Teton County coroner said.
Media attention around Petito’s case also led to investigators finding a body on October 9 in Yucca Valley desert in California where they were searching for Lauren ‘El’ Cho, 30. Authorities have not yet confirmed that the remains are those of Cho, who has not been seen since June 28.
Authorities also discovered a body by a dumpster at a Walmart in Mobile, Alabama, on September 20. The finding set off rumors that it could be Laundrie because he was reported to be in the city that day. However, the body was later identified to be that of a homeless man.
In mid-September, the bodies of newlyweds Kylen Schulte, 24, and Crystal Turner, 38, were linked to the disappearance of Petito. The couple were in Moab, Utah, at the same time as Laundrie and Gabby. Schulte and Turner were found slain in Grand County. Grand County Sheriff Steven White later said the cases were not linked.
On Wednesday, FBI agents confirmed that partial human remains and Laundrie’s personal belongings were found in a part of the Carlton Reserve where they had not searched because it was previously under water. An investigation of the scene could take several days, Tampa FBI Special Agent Michael McPherson said during a press conference.
