A devastated woman in Tennessee has compared the death of her kangaroo to ‘losing a child’ after her neighbour strangled it.

Hope and Chris Lea returned to their home near Nashville on Wednesday to find the lifeless body of their pet Carter surrounded by their other baby kangaroos.

Just an hour before, they had received a call from their worried neighbours – another couple, which has not been named – telling them that the animal had escaped from his enclosure on the property.

The Leas claimed they told them that they could feed the kangaroo to lure him back to his confinement but that they would be home soon.

But the couple decided to tackle the situation on their own and when they went onto the next-door property, Carter reportedly attacked the woman.

This is when it is believed her husband stepped in to save her and strangled the animal to death.

Fighting floods of tears, Hope told local news station WKRN: ‘I was screaming because all the babies were standing around his dead body.

‘I was just so upset because I love my neighbours. You know, this is the difference of where we are right now.

‘Yesterday, I found out she had the flu, so me and my daughter got her a big gift basket and sent it to her through her husband.

‘And here we are today, you know, I don’t want animosity – it is just a bad situation.’

Police responded to the incident at the Fern Valley Road property around 5pm after reports of two people ‘who had been in a battle with a male kangaroo’, according to Sumner County sheriff Tim Bailey.

‘We have had Carter since he was a little nugget,’ Hope added. ‘It’s like losing a family member’.

It is still unclear whether or not the husband responsible for the death of Carter will face criminal charges.

However, the Leas have confirmed they are considering taking legal action against their neighbours.
