Forget milk, bread or tea – it appears Brits have been using their apps to order in a far more important staple.
Avocados have been named in the top five most requested items for shoppers ordering from Waitrose via Deliveroo in every UK city.
It was the most requested item overall in middle class hotspots including Brighton, Oxford and Cambridge – which is perhaps to be expected.
But the fruit also proved popular in the north – coming in fourth place in Newcastle and second in Glasgow and Birmingham.
Waitrose suggested the rise of the ’emergency avocado’ trend was down to people urgently needing brunch ingredients.
The supermarket’s annual Food and Drink report has provided an insight into how some of us spent lockdown.
Sales of sushi, champagne and herbs and spices soared as more people treated themselves at home.
At the same time far fewer people bought their sandwiches on the go.
Sales of vegan and vegetarian food were strong, indicating that more people are adopting a less meat-heavy diet due to concerns about climate change.
The so-called ‘new 5:2 diet’ sees eco-conscious customers eating veggie during the week with a bit of meat at weekend, according to Waitrose.
Social media has also continued to influence shopping habits with sales of everything from feta and tortillas to pesto and potatoes spiking in line with viral food trends.
A poll of shoppers by the supermarket revealed a quarter shopped for groceries online for the first time in 2021, while the number of people buying food on a daily basis has doubled in a year.
James Bailey, Executive Director at Waitrose, said: ‘The past 19 months have seen us fall back in love with our homes.
‘We’ve rediscovered the fun, creativity and sense of togetherness that food brings to our households and many have embraced the inspiration that we get from popping to the shops to pick up our groceries.
‘The majority of the people we surveyed told us the pandemic has fundamentally changed their outlook: they’re more conscious of their mental and physical health, they’re enjoying life’s simple pleasures, and they’ve embraced the importance of family and friends.’
