Trafalgar Square has been evacuated by police following reports of a suspicious package being found.

Multiple eyewitnesses have reported that police have shut down the area.

Lily Croucher posted on Twitter: ‘Evacuation near Trafalgar Square for a suspect package. Just been pulled out of the Pret. William IV Street cordoned off by @metpoliceuk in London.’

Meanhile, another witness named Ste wrote: ‘Charing Cross Road and Trafalgar Square all closed off to vehicles and pedestrians – suspicious package. Police bomb van on scene.’

A Metropolitan police spokesperson said: ‘At 17:42hrs on Saturday, 18 November an officer on patrol in William IV Street, Westminster spotted an item that was deemed suspicious.

‘The area was cordoned off and specialist officers were deployed to carry out an examination.

‘While the item was not dangerous and posed no risk to the public, initial enquiries suggest it was left there intentionally to provoke concern.

‘Officers from the Central West Command Unit are carrying out an investigation.

‘All cordons have been lifted.’
