An armed man has been arrested outside of the US Capitol Hill complex.
The suspect was taken into custody on Tuesday afternoon.
‘USCP Officers just arrested a man with a gun in the park across from Union Station,’ wrote the US Capitol Police (USCP) on X (formerly Twitter) just before 1pm.
‘At this time we have no reason to believe there is an ongoing threat.’
Officers searched the area around the park and ‘out of an abundance of caution, we going to search the suspect’s belongings’, USCP said in another X post.
‘Again, the suspect is in custody,’ stated the agency. ‘Investigation ongoing.’
Columbus Circle between Louisiana and Delaware Avenues, NE, and D Street between Louisiana and Delaware Avenues, NE, were closed to traffic amid the arrest and investigation.
In addition, USCP officials told WJLA that they responded to a suspicious package in Upper Senate Park, which is about a half mile away from Union Station.
