Contactless card payments at Tesco stores up and down the UK stopped working for a time this evening.

The news comes after customers at Sainsbury’s branches reported having similar issues earlier this afternoon.

Other reports also suggest Aldi supermarkets are facing similar issues this evening – which includes Apple Pay not working.

Steph took to Twitter and vented her anger by writing: ‘No contactless payment in Tesco, utter garbage first world problem I JUST WANT MY CHEESE.’

Meanwhile, Claudia Dose is having a rather unfortunate day and tweeted: ‘Obviously on the ONE day I forget my purse and have an urgent thing to buy: 1) I get ID’d (I’m 26 and was in my work uniform!!!) 2) the ENTIRE Tesco contactless system goes down so I can’t use my Apple Pay Just my usual luck.’

And Steve advised people to avoid the Brackley branch at all costs and said: ‘Avoid Tesco Brackley. Contactless payment system down – no back up. Total carnage.’

Envy also tweeted: ‘Anyone else in the uk having contactless payment issues today or is it just up north lmao. Aldi’s closed temporarily and tesco is chip and pin only rn.’

Tesco has apologised for the inconvenience.

A spokesperson for the supermarket giant said: ‘We have now fixed a technical issue that briefly impacted some of our stores earlier this evening.

‘We are sorry for the inconvenience.’
