Anyone in the US who has used Facebook in the past 16 years can claim part of a $725million settlement – but not for much longer.
Facebook users can apply for their share of a settlement that parent company Meta reached over privacy violations.
Users have until this Friday at 11.59pm PT to submit a claim here.
If all users apply, it will work out to about $2 to $3 paid out to each person.
The settlement originates from a 2018 class action lawsuit that users filed against Facebook. It claimed that Facebook allowed third-party sources including Cambridge Analytica to pull personal data without their consent, in an effort to profile voters.
Meta has denied wrongdoing. However, it agreed to a settlement in December and stated that it was ‘in the best interest of our community and shareholders’.
The suit was filed on behalf of between 250million and 280million people who used Facebook from May 24, 2007 to December 22, 2022.
Anyone who used Facebook within that time period can apply, outside of Facebook employees, legal representatives and ‘alleged co-conspirators’.
The online form takes only a few minutes to fill out and asks for the user’s legal name, their Facebook username, address, contact information, if they lived in the US within the mentioned time period, if they deleted their account and the method through which they would like to be paid. An applicant whose information has changed can click on the ‘edit your claim’ option.
People who choose to submit the claim via mail must have it postmarked by August 25.
Facebook users who had multiple accounts in that time period can only claim for one and not for any of the extra ones.
Users can even file claims for deceased people, by taking some extra steps including providing the settlement administrator with a request to change the name to the beneficiary or the estate of the claimant.
