A manhunt is underway in Pennsylvania after a convicted murderer escaped from a prison outside of Philadelphia.
Danelo Cavalcante, a Brazilian man convicted of murder just over two weeks ago, escaped from Chester County Prison around 8.50am on Thursday morning.
Authorities are warning residents of the densely populated Philadelphia suburbs to stay alert and notify police if he is spotted.
‘If you see him – do not approach him,’ Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan said. ‘He is considered extremely dangerous.’
According to the district attorney, Cavalcante, 34, was arrested for stabbing his former girlfriend, Deborah Brandao, in April of 2021.
‘His depravity knows no bounds,’ Ryan said. ‘This is a person who has nothing to lose.’
According to prosecutors, Cavalcante stabbed his girlfriend 38 times in front of her two young children after she threatened to disclose that he was wanted for a 2017 murder in Brazil.
‘I don’t know what he is capable of doing. If he’s already engaged in murder in broad daylight in front of her two children there is no stopping him from doing something more egregious.’
Cavalcante was charged with 10 felony counts for the stabbing, including two counts of first-degree murder, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon, and reckless endangerment.
It took a jury just 15 minutes to convict him for the attack. He was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole on August 16.
Cavalcante is originally from Brazil, Ryan said. He is about 5 feet tall, with long curly hair and brown eyes.
He was last seen wearing a white t-shirt, gray shorts, and white sneakers. In a surveillance photo circulated earlier in the day, Cavalcante was wearing green prison-issued pants. Investigators are not sure when or where he managed to change clothes.
Cavalcante speaks fluent Portuguese and Spanish, and some English.
‘Currently, we have dozens of law enforcement agencies searching for him,’ Ryan said. ‘They have deployed canine units, drones, and helicopters.’
The warden of the prison, Howard Holland, declined to answer how Cavalcante managed to escape from the facility while an investigation is underway.
He did confirm that the prison was locked down immediately after the convicted murderer was reported missing.
