A woman’s leg had to be amputated after it got caught on a movable walkway at an airport.

It happened at Bangkok’s Mueang Airport this morning when the 57-year-old passenger was due to get onto a flight to Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Images online showed the lower part of the woman’s leg trapped beneath the belt at the end of the walkway as she was being assisted by airport staff.

A medical team from a hospital was called who cut the woman’s left leg off just above the knee, according to the airport’s officials.

The team confirmed they could not reattach the leg and the woman requested to be transferred to another hospital to assess whether it could be.

A suitcase lying near her was missing two wheels, and the plates were broken off from where they cover the edge of the belt where the moving walkway ends.

Suitcase wheels were found underneath the belt but it was unclear how they related to the incident.

‘On behalf of the Don Mueang International Airport, I’d like to express my deepest condolences regarding the accident,’ Don Mueang airport director Karun Thanakuljeerapat said during a news conference.

‘I’d like to insist that we will ensure that no such accident will happen again.’

Mr Thanakuljeerapat confirmed the airport would be responsible for the passenger’s medical costs and other forms of compensation.

He added walkways at the airport are checked daily and there are monthly inspections.

The walkway where the incident happened was closed for an hour and a team of engineers are investigating the cause of the accident.

The airport released a statement shortly afterwards confirming the faulty walkway had been repaired.

The walkway was installed in 1996 and manufactured by Japanese company Hitachi.

There are plans at the airport to invest in a newer model by 2025.
