Two people have been airlifted to hospital following a ‘major incident’ on a beach in Bournemouth.
A group – which reportedly included children – were said to have been left struggling in the water this afternoon.
The South Western Ambulance NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) said they were called to a ‘sea incident’ at 4.07pm.
Steve Larcombe, who works on Bournemouth Pier for a boat trip company, said: ‘There were six children involved, the police said four were walking and two cardiac arrests.
‘I just hope the children are okay.’
People were told to evacuate the beach and watched on in shock as the rescue took place.
A cordon was put in place around the area to keep beach-goers away from the scene.
Eeman Qamar, from Southampton, was on the beach with her mother and three-month-old baby at the time of the incident.
She told the BBC: The lifeguards started getting on jet skis and boats, searching the sea and about 20 minutes later the second air ambulance arrived and it took another hour-and-a-half for them to finish the whole search and rescue operation.’
In a statement, the coastguard said: ‘Two people had been pulled from the water and passed into the care of the ambulance service.
‘Coastguards searched to make sure there were no other people missing, and are satisfied there are not.’
The two patients were taken to Royal Bournemouth Hospital and Poole Hospital.
Meanwhile, a Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson confirmed the service had been called to East Beach area to support a ‘multi-agency incident.’
