Five minors were arrested after a large group of teenagers beat up three off-duty marines over Memorial Day weekend, police said.
Sheriff’s deputies in Orange County, California have made their first arrests after a video footage of the terrifying beating that took place on Saturday in San Clemente was released.
On Tuesday, investigators identified and arrested four juvenile males and one juvenile female for the brawl, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said. Their names and ages are not being released due to their status as minors.
The suspects are facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon and battery, and are being held at the county’s juvenile hall.
‘Due to the nature of the incident and the large number of individuals involved, the investigation is ongoing,’ the department said.
The brawl took place near a beachside pier in San Clemente. The three marines were based out of Camp Pendleton, a base in nearby San Diego County.
After the attack, the marines refused medical treatment at a local hospital and were treated by local firefighters at the scene. They estimated the group of teens was as large as 30-40 people.
The marines told CBS News Los Angeles that the group attacked them after they asked them to stop lighting fireworks on the beach.
‘They were being belligerent, they were being obnoxious and annoying other people, so I went up to them and told them to stop,’ one marine said.
However, Sheriff’s Department Sgt Mike Woodruff said that account has not yet been confirmed.
‘With approximately 30-plus individuals and the Marines getting engulfed, the investigators have to review all camera evidence available to determine who did what,’ Woodruff said.
Meanwhile, new footage published by the Daily Mail seems to show the same marines drinking heavily and stumbling around the beach earlier that same day.
