A 17-year-old boy died after a hole he dug in the sand at a beach collapsed over him.
The teenage boy was trapped under several feet of sand at Cape Hatteras National Seashore in Frisco, North Carolina, on Saturday.
Seashore rangers received a 911 call around 2pm about a teen trapped in a hole that was made in a back-dune area of the Outer Banks that was not visible from the beachfront, according to the National Park Service (NPS).
Family and friends of the teen were searching for him and discovered him buried under sand
The collapse is believed to have been owed to parts of an adjacent dune falling into the hole, according to the NPS.
Rangers and family members pulled the boy out and performed CPR.
‘Unfortunately, resuscitation efforts were not successful,’ stated the NPS.
The incident is being investigated.
‘Cape Hatteras National Seashore offers our condolences to his family and friends,’ stated National Parks of Eastern North Carolina superintendent David Hallac.
‘We urge visitors not to dig deep holes on the beach due to the danger they present to beachgoers and emergency response staff.’
Among agencies that responded are Hatteras Island Ocean Rescue and Dare County Emergency Medical Services.
The teen’s identity and his cause of death were not releases as of Monday.
