A man with a Santa Claus-style beard allegedly threw a Christmas tree at his wife after she asked him for help in preparing dinner.
Richard Daniel Atchison, 52, lost his temper after his wife, 48, asked for help cooking and accidentally splashed him with water when she dropped a spoon in the kitchen sink, states an arrest affidavit. Getting wet made the man with a bushy beard even more angry.
The unnamed wife said he packed some of his belongings and went outside to his car, but returned and demanded that she leave instead. She told police that she tried to leave out the front door, but that Atchison pushed her on her shoulder and caused her to stumble.
Shaken up, the woman walked to the living room of their home in Fruitland Park, Florida, and sat with a friend who was visiting.
Atchison then allegedly picked up a Christmas tree in the room and threw it toward the kitchen, breaking it in half. He grabbed a part of the tree and launched it at his wife, striking her, the affidavit states.
The woman ran into a bedroom and shut the door, but her husband followed and kicked the door trying to break in. She said she tried to escape the home but her husband stopped her. Atchison was yelling at the woman when cops arrived at the scene, according to the affidavit.
Atchison told police that he and his wife were arguing and that she shoved a utensil into hot food that splattered him on the face. He claimed the fight was ‘verbal only and no physical contact was made that evening’, the affidavit states.
His wife was not injured and emergency responders were not dispatched to the home.
Atchison was arrested on Monday evening and charged with domestic battery, false imprisonment and violation of an injunction.
He was booked into Lake County Jail with his bail set at $8,000 and has bonded out, according to the Daily Mail.
Atchison had prior run-ins with the law. He has been in and out of jail 23 times since 1997, with five violations involving domestic violence.
