The sale of spam and fish heads are up by a third as Brits search for cheaper food in the cost of living crisis.
According to Waitrose’s annual food and drink report, the Second World War staple, made up of ground-up pork shoulder and ham, is back in fashion.
The supermarket dubbed Spam the ‘comeback king of 2022’, as cooks get creative turning it into fritters, sushi, kebabs and the classic Spamburger.
Fish heads might not be to everyone’s tastes, but sales are up 34% thanks to their starring role in curries, soups, stews and stocks.
Sales of Pilchards – another wartime favourite – have more than doubled since January as sardines appear to be getting even more popular.
Other more unusual meats like beef shin, ox cheek and lamb neck sales have also increased by 23%, 9% and 4% respectively.
Around four in 10 people are shopping in the freezer sections in a bid to save cash.
Waitrose says the uptake in sales is down to an emerging ‘use it all’ trend which seeks to minimise waste.
A poll conducted by the supermarket found 72% of consumers are now ‘more mindful’ about their budget and more than a third were ‘very concerned’ about how the rising cost of living will affect them in the coming months.
Some 32% of people are specifically looking out for special offers while 27% are planning their meals in advance.
Waitrose executive director James Bailey said: ‘The events of the last year have created a difficult backdrop for many people and like all supermarkets we’ve had to judge the mood and react.
‘We’re seeing some big changes.’
The news comes as annual food price inflation hit 14.5%, the highest it has been since April 1980.
The foods that are having most impact on food inflation are bread and cereals, meat, milk, cheese and eggs, according to the Office for National Statistics.
