Former Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi has boasted of renewing ties with old pal Vladimir Putin – and exchanging gifts of vodka, wine and ‘sweet’ letters.
The veteran politician, who has a long-time friendship with Russia’s leader, made the remarks during a meeting of his centre-right Forza Italia MPs.
‘I have reconnected with president Putin,’ Mr Berlusconi said in a clip obtained by LaPresse news agency.
‘He sent me 20 bottles of vodka and a really sweet letter. I responded with 20 bottles of Lambrusco and a similarly sweet letter.’
It happened on Mr Berlusconi’s 86th birthday on September 29 after the right won most votes in Italy’s election.
His explosive comments made front-page news, with Mr Berlusconi set to join a coalition government.
