A man has been arrested after allegedly hiding a camera inside of a fake fire alarm in a public restroom.
Dana Alan Caruso, 58, was taken into custody after public works department employees in the island of Sanibel in Florida discovered a new fire alarm placed inside a family bathroom.
Police were called after workers verified that the fire alarm had not been installed by public works, WCVB reported on Sunday.
Several people who visited Bowman’s Beach and used the family restroom on July 28 were recorded, cops said. Anyone who used the facility that day is urged to contact the Sanibel police department.
‘We would like to identify victims of this crime so additional charges against the suspect can considered,’ said Police Chief William Dalton.
In the course of the investigation, police identified Caruso as a suspect and obtained a search warrant on August 9 for his arrest.
Caruso, of New Hampshire, was apprehended on August 19 at Chicago O’Hare International Airport. He has been charged with several felony and misdemeanor charges related to voyeurism and is awaiting extradition to Florida.
Police said they did not release information on the incident earlier over concerns that the investigation could be compromised.
‘The suspect was thought to be moving through various communities in Florida, and our detective was working through the leads quickly with the help of the State Attorney’s Office and the Lee County Sheriff,’ stated Dalton.
‘We had to stay focused on the investigation until he was apprehended.’
Sanibel is located off the coast of Fort Myers. Police have informed departments across southwest Florida of the incident so they may check restrooms in their areas.
It is not the only recent incident involving a hidden camera in the US.
In March, an Airbnb host in Comfort, Texas, faced 15 counts with lawsuits around invasion of privacy. The suspect, A Jay Allee, allegedly recorded more than 2,000 videos and images of people staying in his cabin for short-term rent.
