A five-year-old boy and a 17-year-old were killed and a toddler was injured in a drive-by shooting over the weekend, police in Texas said Monday as they continue to search for suspects.

The three children were outside a home in Fort Worth accompanied by several adults around 2.30pm Sunday when a car pulled up and an unknown number of gunmen opened fire, Fort Worth Police Chief Neil Noakes said.

Jamarrien Monroe, 17, and Rayshard Scott, 5, were transported to an area hospital where they both died from their injuries, according to the Tarrant County Medical examiner’s office.

Another boy, an 18-month-old toddler, was also struck by gunfire outside the residence. The toddler suffered only minor injuries and is expected to survive.

Police continue to investigate the shooting, in which they say an unknown number of people drove up to the home and began firing at a group of people gathered in the front yard.

Only the three children were injured in the gunfire, and police have recovered several shell casings from the scene.

Fort Worth’s police chief condemned the act of violence during a press conference Sunday afternoon, noting that authorities will use ‘every resource necessary’ to find the people responsible.

‘We’re seeing violent crime on the rise across the country, and unfortunately we’re seeing violent crime here in Fort Worth in numbers we don’t want to see,’ Noakes said. ‘When you have children who are murdered completely senselessly, it adds just another level to that tragedy we’re all experiencing.’

The police chief spoke to the massive loss for the families involved, noting the children lost won’t be hitting the important milestones they and their families had looked forward to.

‘That 17-year-old will never graduate. That 5-year-old will never graduate kindergarten,’ he said. ‘That 18-month-old will have physical and emotional scars that may stay with him for the rest of his life.’

Noakes said police were still unsure of the relationships between those who were shot, or what they were doing outside at the time of the shooting.

Police have not shared a description of the suspect or suspects or their vehicle.
