President Joe Biden has signed an executive order to protect women seeking to travel to other states to have an abortion, weeks after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade.

Biden signed the order on Wednesday afternoon during the first meeting of the White House’s Task Force on Reproductive Health Care.

The order is to allow doctors to ‘provide reproductive health care for women who live in a state where abortions are being banned in that state’, Biden said from the White House.

It will ‘promote safety and security of clinics and patient providers’, he added.

Biden asked Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra to consider ‘all appropriate actions’ to make sure that health care providers abide by federal nondiscrimination laws so women can ‘receive medically necessary care without delay’.

In addition, the order also ‘advances data collection ‘to evaluate the impact that this reproductive health crisis is having on maternal health and other health conditions and outcomes’, Biden said.

It comes a few weeks after signed a first executive order aimed at protecting access to reproductive health services. The order sought to safeguard access to abortion and emergency contraception, and protect patient privacy and bolster legal options for people seeking abortions. It also established the task force on the issue.

‘I believe Roe got it right. It’s been the law for close to 50 years,’ Biden said on Wednesday. ‘And I committed to the American people that we are doing everything in our power safeguard access to health care, including the right to choose that women had under Roe v Wade, which was ripped away by this extreme court.’
