A number of people have been injured in a mass shooting outside a US shopping mall.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon at Columbiana Centre in the capital of South Carolina.
The extent of the injuries is unknown at this time, but the victims are receiving medical attention.
The suspect is believed to be on the run, according to local media.
Police said they are evacuating the mall and working to assess the scene.
They did not immediately release additional details.
‘We have confirmed that people have been injured during the incident — they are receiving medical attention,’ Columbiana police tweeted.
‘The extent of injuries unknown at this time.’
Fox News journalist Cody Alcorn tweeted an image of the scene which showed armed officers and police cars surrounding the mall.
He said: ‘A look at the scene where a shooting has happened inside the Columbiana mall in Columbia, South Carolina. At least one person has been shot. Unknown number of victims. Source tells me suspect not in custody.’
A media briefing is expected shortly.
A reunification site has been set up near the mall, according to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.
The site is being opened for ‘those with loved ones involved in the Columbiana Mall shooting,’ the department tweeted.
