The two prosecutors leading the Manhattan district attorney’s investigation into former president Donald Trump’s business practices abruptly resigned on Wednesday.

The prosecutors, Carey R Dunne and Mark F Pomerantz, gave their resignations after the new Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg reportedly expressed that he had doubts about the case, The New York Times reported.

Their resignations come after a monthlong pause in their presentation of evidence to a grand jury, and it’s unclear what has caused the retreat.

Bragg has made few public comments about the status of the inquiry since taking office in November of last year. In a statement to the Times regarding the resignation of the two lead prosecutors in the inquiry, Bragg said that he was ‘grateful for their service,’ and confirmed that the investigation was still ongoing.

The news comes almost a week after a judge ruled that Trump and his two eldest children must testify in a separate investigation conducted by New York State Attorney General Letitia James.

Trump must turn over documents within the next two weeks, Judge Arthur Engoron ruled on Thursday, though it’s likely he will appeal the ruling.
