A Tory MP has been fined for slamming his Mercedes into a telegraph pole, cutting off the internet of an entire village in Wales for several days.

Jamie Wallis, MP for Bridgend in South Wales, was questioned after an incident on a quiet village road in the early hours of November 28 last year.

The 37-year-old crashed into the wooden post at Llanblethian, Vale of Glamorgan, causing an internet outage.

Shortly after the collision, Kathryn Arnold, who had recently moved to the village, told the BBC: ‘After the accident we lost electricity for a couple of hours the following day while the telegraph pole was being repaired and replaced.

‘I also know that some houses’ internet was down for a lot longer too and there’s still been problems with it.’

South Wales Police said the Conservative MP was originally arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit, but he appeared in court after being charged with failing to comply with solid white line road markings.

Wallis admitted the charge at Cardiff Magistrates Court and was ordered to pay a £146 fine, a £34 victim surcharge and costs of £90, and given three points on his licence.

No other vehicles were involved and no-one was injured in the crash less than two miles from Wallis’ home.

The MP was elected for Bridgend in 2019 after defeating Madeleine Moon of Labour who had represented the constituency since 2005.

Before that, he had stood unsuccessfully in Ogmore in the 2017 general election.
