A man has been arrested for encouraging people to attend a fake New Year’s Eve event at Nicola Sturgeon’s house.
Scotland’s First Minister announced further coronavirus restrictions will come in on Tuesday, December 27, when limits will be placed on how many people can attend events – all but cancelling the nation’s beloved Hogmanay celebrations.
But one man, 33, seemed to have tried to get Ms Sturgeon back by creating an event on Facebook – inviting the whole of Scotland to the politician’s house for a party.
More than 700 people confirmed they were attending the event whilst 1,100 said they were ‘interested’.
But Ms Sturgeon’s sister, Gillian Sturgeon, spotted the event and reported it to the police for revealing where the First Minister lived.
She told The Scottish Sun: ‘My sister’s personal address now shared all over social media as an event for a New Year party.
‘Police been informed with your name. In case you are reading this. Looks like you are in for a Merry Christmas.’
The unnamed man has been released on bail and will appear in court at a later date.
Police Scotland confirmed the man had been ‘charged in connection with communications offences’.
It comes as England’s New Year’s Eve plans remain uncertain with reports suggesting Boris Johnson is considering a two-week circuit breaker lockdown or enforcing a ‘rule of six’ again.
Some are expecting a bleak announcement as early as December 27, with experts stressing that the Government is running out of time to implement new rules.
Parliament would have to be recalled (with at least two days’ notice) to rubber stamp further restrictions – with time needed New Year’s Eve to discuss any further moves and vote on them.
A Cabinet source told the Daily Mail that ‘with every day that goes by, it becomes less likely’ that Parliament will be recalled before New Year’s Eve, meaning the celebration could be free from restrictions.
