A man who ordered a passport holder on Amazon received it in the mail along with an item that was not on his checkout cart – a fake coronavirus vaccination card.
The white card with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) logo was slipped inside the plastic wrap around the passport holder. The card was not filled out, and obviously not official.
‘It is even a little bigger than the real card,’ the man from North Stamford, Connecticut, whose name was not released, told the office of Connecticut Attorney General William Tong.
Upon receiving his package, the man had first contacted Democratic state Rep Matt Blumenthal.
‘He sent me the listing, which he realized after the fact had included references to the card in the reviews,’ said Blumenthal, who reached out to Tong’s office.
In a message to Tong’s office, the Amazon customer wrote that it was only after he received the passport holder that he noticed reviews mentioning that it came with a fake vaccine card. He wondered why Amazon was not aware of the matter.
Tong’s office contacted Amazon, which has taken down the listing.
An Amazon spokesperson told the Connecticut Post that the company does ‘not allow the products in question in our store’.
‘We have proactive measures in place to prevent prohibited products from being listed and we continuously monitor our store and take swift action on bad actors that attempt to evade our systems,’ the Amazon spokesperson stated on Thursday.
State officials are taking the incident as the latest example of issues around paper vaccine cards, which besides being relatively easily faked, can be lost, damaged, stolen and destroyed.
Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont’s office has developed a digital vaccine card that allows inoculated users to have a record on their phone. It includes a QR code that can be scanned at places that require proof of vaccination. The system is designed to stop people from getting away with fake cards.
‘This digital vaccination card does one thing,’ Lamont stated on Monday. ‘It provides Connecticut residents with an alternative option to the paper card that they received when they were vaccinated.’
