CNN anchor Chris Cuomo has come under fire once again for helping his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, minimize allegations of sexual misconduct.
Chris appeared on CNN Monday night for his show without commenting on damning newly released documents and text messages that have many people, including members of the media, calling for his firing.
The ‘Cuomo Prime Time’ host was deeply involved with the ex-governor’s inner circle, and even used his media contacts to keep tabs on stories developing about his brother’s sexual misconduct.
Members of the media are now asking how Chris is still employed by CNN after it was revealed how intimately he was involved with the former governor’s office and response to the ongoing scandal.
Rolling Stone called out the hypocrisy of the situation, publishing a story about the texts sent between the former governor’s top aide Melissa DeRosa and Chris with the headline: ‘Chris Cuomo Caught Doing Something That Would Get Any Other Journalist Fired’.
Media Critic with the Washington Post Erik Wemple chimed in, chiding CNN’s response to their journalist’s repeated actions.
‘And this is why @CNN should have conducted an internal investigation of all @chriscuomo actions vis-a-vis his brother’s scandals. That should have happened months ago,’ Wemple wrote to Twitter, sharing an op-ed he wrote in August urging CNN to investigate their anchor.
LA Times journalist Matt Pearce called Cuomo using his sources to get information on his brother ‘an embarrassment to journalism.’
Washington Post reporter Gene Park agreed in a separate tweet: ‘Chris Cuomo still working at CNN is a mockery of journalism. Libs defending him say there are more important things to worry about, and then complain about why media coverage is so poor and lopsided.’
Idrees Ali, a journalist with Reuters, said it’s ‘hard to imagine any other journalist keeping their job if they did anything close to this’.
‘How many second/third/fourth chances is this guy going to get?’ asked Stephanie Grace, a columnist and writer with NOLA.com.
Rolling Stone’s editor-in-chief Noah Shachtman said: ‘If this story is accurate, it describes a series of shocking ethical breaches — fireable offenses at any other news outlet.’
The Independent’s Andrew Feinberg agreed, saying in a separate tweet: ‘I’ll repeat what I’ve said before on this subject. This stuff would be a fireable offense in most newsrooms.’
CNN said it will conduct a ‘thorough review’ of the bombshell documents released by New York’s attorney General Letitia James that show how heavily the former governor relied on his journalist brother to deflect the onslaught of sexual misconduct allegations against him.
When it was first revealed in May that Chris had participated in strategy calls to help advice his brother, CNN said it was ‘inappropriate’ and that the host would not participate in such conversations going forward. He was not suspended.
‘The thousands of pages of additional transcripts and exhibits that were released today by the NY Attorney General deserve a thorough review and consideration,’ CNN said in a statement. ‘We will be having conversations and seeking additional clarity about their significance as they relate to CNN over the next several days.’
