A woman was swept out to sea as torrential rain and galeforce winds battered the UK overnight.

There were six flood warnings in place on Thursday, as the country got its first real taste of winter, with 2.5 inches of rain falling.

One woman got lost at sea after she disappeared from Hendon Beach in Sunderland at about 7.20pm on Thursday.

Someone else was swept out around the same time in the 37mph winds but they managed to get out of the water.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), the police, paramedics and a rescue helicopter looked for the woman for four hours overnight.

They continued into Friday but she still has not been found.

The South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade said: ‘Unfortunately after approximately four hours of detailed searching in difficult conditions the female still had not been located.

‘Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the female during this very difficult time.’

Although there are no longer any flood warnings in place, the aftereffects of flooding is still expected to affect the country.

The Met Office said the river in Pulborough, West Sussex, may still be problematic today and tomorrow.

The colder, rougher weather has been brought in by Storm Aurore, as it moves through the English Channel from France.

The whole of the UK has felt abnormally cold for the last few days, but things will feel a bit calmer over the weekend – as milder weather drifts in from the west.

However, it will stay sporadically wet into next week.

Even though the country-wide showers will begin to fade, strong winds will blow through the north and east, turning into gales the further northeast you go.
