The Nashville school shooter was able to legally purchase seven firearms despite getting treatment for an ’emotional disorder’.
Audrey Hale, 28, purchased the weapons from five different gun stores, said Metro Nashville Police Chief John Drake on Tuesday.
Hale used three of those seven weapons in a rampage at The Covenant School on Monday that left six people dead, he said.
The shooter managed to buy the firearms despite receiving treatment for a doctor for an emotional disorder, Drake said.
‘Law enforcement knew nothing about the treatment,’ he said.
His parents ‘felt that (Hale) should not own weapons’ and thought that he had sold one firearm and ‘did not own any more’, Drake added.
‘As it turned out, (Hale) had been hiding several weapons within the house.’
Law enforcement officials previously said Hale was armed with two AR-type firearms and an AR-style pistol in the massacre at the private Christian school.
Hale’s parents told cops that he left the house with a red bag before the shooting and asked him was inside. But the parents would up dismissing it because they did not believe that Hale owned weapons, Drake said.
Cops think Hale was hiding firearms in the home.
Investigators have not yet determined the motive of the mass shooting.
‘This school, this church building, was a target of the shooter,’ said police spokesman Don Aaron. ‘But we have no information at present to indicate that the shooter was specifically targeting any one of the six individuals who were murdered.’
Police initially described Hale as a woman, which is what was assigned at birth, but soon clarified that he was transgender and used male pronouns.
