The UK has been adapting to a series of post-Brexit changes including fuel shortages and empty supermarket shelves due to a lack of workers.

And now, travellers looking to drive outside of the UK will need to make a significant change to their cars to avoid fines.

In January, Transport secretary Grant Shapps announced that UK motorists would need new registration plates.

So, if you’re looking to take your vehicle abroad in the year ahead, read on to find out what you’ll need to do.

What are the GB number plate sticker rules for travelling abroad?

From Tuesday, September 28, GB number plate stickers on your car are now illegal and no longer valid when driving your car abroad.

Instead, you must now have a ‘UK’ sticker on your car or on your number plate.

If your number plate features the ‘GB’ identifier, you’ll also need a sticker or a brand new number plate with the UK iteration.

The government guidelines state: ‘If you are in Spain, Cyprus or Malta, you must display a UK sticker no matter what is on your number plate.

‘You do not need a UK sticker or number plate to drive in Ireland.’

Critics have blasted it as a waste of money and it marks the end of 111 years of the GB sticker being used.

The penalty for not displaying the correct sticker or number plate on your car has not yet been revealed, but it is likely to vary.

What about number plates with Scotland and Wales flags?

Drivers in Scotland and Wales who have ‘GB’ on their number plates with the Welsh or Scottish flags will not need a brand new number plate. However, they will still need to get a UK sticker.

So, if you’re heading on a European road trip or planning on taking your wheels abroad, don’t forget to order your sticker to avoid penalties or breaking the new law.
