Monday morning commuters got drenched as the last gasps of summer disappeared over the weekend.
Early risers up and down the country stepped out with brollies and rain macs to avoid a soaking with torrential rain poured down in London and Newcastle.
Ominously the wet weather looks set to make its way east from Wales, where heavy showers have been forecast, as the week progresses.
North-east Scotland is subject to a Met Office weather warning which runs until 2pm.
The forecaster warned flooding of businesses and homes in Aberdeenshire, Morayshire and the Highlands is likely, as well as delays and disruption to buses and trains.
Between 25 and 40mm of rainwater is possible, and perhaps as much as 50 to 60mm in a few places – not a lot shy of the average 72mm of rainfall usually seen in September.
Temperatures in the capital are predicted to reach 18°C, with highs of 15°C in Cardiff, 13°C in Manchester and Dublin, 14°C in Belfast and 12°C in Edinburgh.
Flooding is expected on Wash Dike, a small river in the village of Pontefract, West Yorkshire.
The Environment Agency said ‘intense’ rainfall led water levels to rise rapidly and told residents: ‘Stay away from low lying roads and footpaths.’
Stoke could also see some flooding, as well as Aberdeen and Moray in Scotland and multiple areas in Wales (Anglesey, Upper Towy, Ceredigion, Teifi and the rivers Taf, Cynin and Cothi).
Tuesday’s Met Office outlook reads: ‘A mixture of sunshine and blustery showers – these heaviest and most frequent in the north and west. Showers merging into more prolonged heavy rain across central and southern areas.’
The forecast for Wednesday to Friday is: ‘Unsettled with rain or showers, some heavy with hail and thunder at times. Windy with gales in places. Temperatures around or slightly below average.’
The autumn equinox, when day and night lasts for roughly the same length of time, arrived on Wednesday as astronomical autumn officially began.
