While putting together a show-stopping outfit, most of us know to avoid certain clothing styles that don’t complement our body shape.
But when it comes to glasses, not everyone is aware that choosing the best look means paying attention to the shape of your face – with certain types of frames more suited to particular facial structures.
Whether you have bold, angular features like high cheekbones and a narrow jawline, or soft lines, a curved chin and full cheeks, bearing this in mind when you pick your glasses will help enhance your natural beauty.
But not all of us are lucky enough to pick our dream pair on the first go.
That’s why Bloobloom – the fastest growing online eyewear brand in the UK – allows you to order five handcrafted frames to your door, totally free of charge and with no obligation to buy.
You can take your time to find the perfect style, with no sales reps hovering over your shoulder, adding to the pressure to make a quick decision.
And opting for the crème de la crème of eyewear doesn’t have to mean paying a luxury mark-up – Bloobloom frames are available from £95 (and that includes prescription lenses!)
Even better, you’ll be doing good while you’re at it. For every pair you purchase, Bloobloom donates one to someone in need. Plus, for added peace of mind, all frames are ethically made and certified climate-neutral.
So, how do you choose the most flattering style?
Below, fashion expert Karine Laudort shares her advice for choosing the best frames to match your face shape.
SQUARE FACE
Do you have bold, angular features – like a strong horizontal jawline, as well as a forehead, cheekbones and jaw of equal width? If so you are considered to have a square face.
‘People with square faces often have clear, angular and flat chins,’ Karine explains. ‘Usually, thin round frames look great on them, but oval or elliptical shapes help soften angular features and provide balance.’
The type of frames you should go for depends on what look you’re trying to achieve.
Rounded frames like the Bloobloom Traveller, Parisian or Bohemian will provide a subtle contrast to angular features, helping to soften them. They will also minimise forehead width.
But if you’d prefer to show off your natural lines, a similarly shaped frame, such as the Pianist, Mentor or Diva in a medium to bold thickness could be the perfect option.
For a more feminine look, Karine recommends cat-eye frames, like the Ballerina or Cutie.
‘All of these styles will also soften your edges and add a bit of flair and they are also great to make a fashion statement,’ she said.
‘The curves of these types of frames provide a nice contrast to angular features.’
ROUND FACES
You have a round face if its width at your cheekbones and length from the bottom of your chin to the top of your head, is roughly similar.
As mentioned above, choosing the best style means thinking about contrasts.
People with a round face should opt for frames which are angular, according to Karine. Rectangular, wayfarer, square and aviator styles are particularly popular.
Bloobloom’s Architect or Founder frames can help complement your smooth natural lines.
‘Other great options include geometric and oversized glasses as they all provide the best contrast,’ Karine says.
‘Another tip would be to go for bold, thick and full-rimmed frames if you’re trying to make a statement. Alternatively, transparent or wooden frames are perfect if you want to be adventurous.’
Or, if you’re looking to highlight your facial features, then the cat-eye frames – like the striking Icon and Idol – could be the right choice for you.
HEART-SHAPED FACE
People with a pointed chin and a forehead that is the widest part of their face fall under the heart-shaped category.
‘Along with oval, heart-shaped faces suit a wide range of frames, if not most, as they are versatile,’ Karine says. ‘But the best shapes are rectangle, oval and aviator. They also tend to suit men, women and children.’
Oval glasses like Bloobloom’s Trendsetter help to soften the angles of your face, the fashion expert explains.
‘The rectangular lens shape will help add width to the top of the face without drawing too much attention to your cheeks and the rest of face, giving an overall balanced look.
‘As for aviator glasses, as they tend to be bottom heavy, they will help draw the eye downwards and to soften the bottom part of the face.’
OVAL FACE
If you have a face that’s longer than it is wide, a wider forehead, slightly higher cheekbones and a narrow chin, then you have an oval-face.
Karine comments: ‘People with oval faces can do no wrong when it comes to glasses frames and can suit most shapes, however, they do look best with square, rectangular, aviator and cat-eye frame shapes.’
Thanks to their well-balanced features, those with oval faces are blessed with lots of options – from square frames like the Bloobloom Mentor to the more rectangular Exec style.
‘Square frames are symmetrical and will complement oval faces, they will also have a slimming effect,’ Karine says. ‘Similarly to square frames, rectangular frames are the best contrast between sharp angles and soft lines, they also are the best at making oval faces look longer and slimmer.’
She adds: ‘The aviator glasses tear drop shape are the best complement to oval faces especially if they have cheekbones. As for the cat-eye glasses, they add a touch of femininity and have become very popular amongst women. They also bring a retro yet playful feel.’
