A mystery man was seen near the spot where a five-year-old boy was found dead in a South Wales river, neighbours say.

‘Handsome and clever’ Logan Mwangi, known as Logan Williamson, was discovered in Bridgend after police were told about a missing child at 5.45am on Saturday.

By Sunday evening, South Wales Police had confirmed it had arrested a 39-year-old man, a 30-year-old woman and a 13-year-old boy, all from the Bridgend area, on suspicion of murder.

Now new testimony has raised suspicion in the local community, after the male was spotted minutes before Logan was found.

Dog walker Lisa Gould told The Sun: ‘The thought of this man being there so close to the spot where Logan was found only an hour or so later chills me to the bone. I’m in shock hearing this. That poor little lad. I just hope he didn’t suffer.’

Another neighbour added: ‘I heard someone living around here saw a man by the river at around 4.45am on Saturday. It’s a mystery. What would you be doing by the river at that time of the morning?

‘It is sickening to think that such a young life has been taken from our community.’

The body of the Sarn youngster was found in the Ogmore River near Pandy Park, before he was taken to the Princess of Wales Hospital, where it was confirmed he had died.

The best from of Logan’s mother Angharad, Rhiannon Hales, led tributes to Logan and described Miss Williamson as a devoted mum.

She said: ‘My little girl is also five and she loved Logan, they were like little boyfriend and girlfriend together.

‘I’m shocked and just devastated by what’s happened, he called me Auntie Rhi, but Logan was like my own little boy.

‘He was such a happy kid, always said please and thank you. He loved colouring and did all the coronavirus posters in the front window of their flat.’

Police were said to be widening the search along the river on Tuesday, when the investigation entered its fourth day.

One neighbour said: ‘The divers have been in and out of the river for a long time now they’re definitely looking for something specific’, according to The Sun.

South Wales Police had previously said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the investigation.

A spokesman said on Monday: ‘Detectives are continuing to investigate the death of a five-year-old boy in Sarn, Bridgend.

‘Three people arrested in connection with the investigation, a 39-year-old man, a 30-year-old woman and a 13-year-old boy, remain in custody.’

Officers previously said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

Logan was reportedly isolating with his mum, and stepdad Jay Cole while recovering from Covid-19 – with Saturday due to be their last day of self-isolation.

But instead tragedy struck just over nine weeks after the couple are said to have got engaged.

Family friends have paid tribute to Logan, who they described as ‘kind, funny, polite, handsome & clever’, on social media.

Those wishing to pay their respects were asked to place teddy bears at a lamp-post and footbridge near the scene of the tragedy.

People arrived throughout Sunday and Monday to lay flowers, tributes, toys and teddies in front of the police cordon by the river.

On Saturday, Chief Inspector Geraint White said detectives were keeping an ‘open mind’ about what happened.

‘This is an extensive and sensitive investigation, and many people have been affected by this death’, he said.

Police appealed for anyone with information to contact the major crime team, quoting the reference number 2100268674.
