A US tech boss plunged 15ft to the ground at a celebratory business event after a cable holding a cage he was in snapped.
Sanjay Shah, CEO of Illinois-based revenue management company Vistex, died from his injuries following the big bash to mark 25 years since his company launched in Asia.
The 56-year-old, along with colleague Raju Datla, were about to be lowered onto the stage in a metal cage at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, India on Thursday when the cable snapped.
Harrowing video footage shows the two men tumble out just after a voice asks the crowd to put their hands together and fireworks go off.
Both men were taken to hospital, where Mr Shah died of his injuries. Mr Datla remains in a serious condition, The Sun reports.
‘Shah and Raju being lowered from the cage onto the dais was a planned event to kickstart the celebrations,’ a company official told The Times of India.
Police, meanwhile, said: ‘Suddenly, one of the two wires attached to the cage snapped. Both plunged more than 15 feet and landed on the concrete dais. This caused multiple injuries.’
Police added that a case has since been registered against the event management authorities.
Mr Shah set up Vistex in 1999, and today the business has 20 offices around the world with more than 2,000 employees.
Among its clients are Barilla, Bayer and GM.
Mr Shah grew up in Mumbai but emigrated to the US at the age of 17. He graduated with an MBA at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania when he was 21.
He donated $5 million to set up the Vistex Institute for Executive Education at the school in 2017 and also established the Vistex Foundation, which offers funding to non-profit organisations focused on health, education and basic needs.
He leaves behind a wife and two daughters.
