Tourist’s €750,000 ring discovered in vacuum cleaner at Paris hotel

When a Malaysian tourist couldn’t find her diamond ring in her room at the Ritz in Paris on Friday morning, she understandably feared the worst.

By the following evening, she had filed a complaint with the police, saying she believed a member of staff at the luxury hotel had pinched the jewellery – worth an astonishing €750,000.

According to Le Parisien, she had left it on a table in her room before going window shopping in the French capital.

But when the business manager returned from her trip at 11.30am, she was stunned to find her precious ring – containing a 6.51 carat diamond and, appropriately for Paris, two platinum baguettes – had vanished.

Now, it seems the mystery has been solved… and it’s fair to say the culprit really sucks.

The Ritz management announced earlier today that the woman’s jewel had been found in the bag of one of their vacuum cleaners.

In a statement to Le Parisien, the hotel said: ‘Thanks to the careful search work of security agents, the ring was found this morning. Our client is happy with this news.

‘We would like to thank the Ritz Paris employees who were involved in this search and who work every day with integrity and professionalism.’

The news site reported that the ring’s owner has since travelled to London, and would be returning only to collect her property – despite a reported offer of a three-night stay as compensation from hotel bosses.

Regardless, they will be sighing with relief that the conclusion to the mystery has proven to be far more mundane than a previous jewel-related controversy five years ago.

In September 2018, a Saudi princess told the Parisian police that hundreds of thousands of euros’ worth of jewellery had been stolen from her room at the renowned hotel in Place Vendôme.

There was reportedly no indication of a break-in, and the items had not been left in a safe. It is unclear if any prosecutions were ultimately made.

The previous January, armed robbers had smashed the windows of the Ritz and made off with jewellery worth millions of euros that was on display. All the loot was ultimately recovered and three men were arrested soon afterwards.

It takes a particularly brazen thief to attempt a heist at the Paris Ritz: not only is it one of the most famous hotels in the world, it also happens to be located next door to France’s Ministry of Justice.
