Former President Donald Trump stormed out of the courtroom of his fraud trial, appearing to shock his own lawyers and setting off gasps in the room.
Secret Service agents ran after Trump as he abruptly left New York Supreme Court after Judge Arthur Engoron denied his defense team’s request for an immediate verdict, NBC News reported.
Defense attorney Clifford Robert asked Engoron to end the trial after Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen, who took the witness stand for a second day, gave contradictory remarks about his 2019 testimony before Congress.
‘I can’t think of anything more appropriate now,’ said Robert.
‘Denied,’ said Engoron.
Trump then moved his chair back and made his dramatic exit.
‘The witness just admitted that we won the trial, and the judge should end this trial immediately,’ Trump told reporters in the hallway.
Minutes earlier, Engoron had ordered Trump to take the stand to answer questions about comments made outside the courtroom. Engoron fined Trump $10,000 for violating a gag order.
