A group of thrill seekers at a theme park got more than they bargained for after a ride stopped in mid air.

Around seven people were left hanging backwards on the Rage ride at Adventure Island in Southend-on-Sea in Essex on Saturday.

The riders appeared to be suspended around 10 metres (33ft) above the ground, the BBC reports, and staff wearing safety harnesses had to help people off the ride one by one.

Video captured the group applauding as the first customer was helped from the ride and pulled onto a metal platform.

The theme park’s owner said the ride’s safety computer caused it to stop, adding there was no fault and nobody was harmed.

Marc Miller, managing director of operating company, the Stockvale group, said its ‘trained team’ initiated ‘rehearsed measures’ to rescue the customers.

He explained: ‘A carriage on Rage was stopped on the lower section of the lift, via the ride’s dual process safety PLC (programmable logic controller computer).

‘The group of friends were all in good spirits and [were] down, safe and sound in under 35 minutes and then happy to carry on with their day at Adventure Island.

‘Rage then went through its full testing processes to reopen later in the afternoon.’

The ride reaches a height of 22 metres (72ft) at its highest, and an almost identical incident reportedly happened on Rage in July.
