Police are searching for a 19-year-old man they believe is responsible for murdering a Philadelphia journalist and LGBTQ rights activist.
Joshua Kruger, 39, died early on Monday morning after being shot seven times in his chest and abdomen.
Kruger was an award-winning journalist and well-known activist within Philadelphia’s LGBTQ community.
On Friday, authorities identified Robert Edmond Davis, 19, as the suspect wanted for Kruger’s murder.
Davis lived a few blocks away from Kruger in the south Philadelphia neighborhood of Point Breeze.
‘At this time, we believe that Mr Kruger was trying to help Mr Davis, and they wereacquaintances,’ Philadelphia Police Lt Hamilton Marshmond said. ‘He was just trying to help him get through life.’
Police still have not determined a motive for the slaying, and have not made contact with Davis since Kruger’s death.
Lt Marshmond said Davis ‘appears to have been homeless at one time in his life.’
However, he also noted that Davis did not appear to have been staying with Kruger when he was murdered.
Kruger, who was previously homeless himself, served as the communications director for Philadelphia’s Office of Homeless Services.
‘Josh Kruger lifted up the most vulnerable and stigmatized people in our communities – particularly unhoused people living with addiction,’ Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said.
Police asked the public to contact 911 if they see Davis or know his whereabouts.
They also warned the public not to approach Davis, who is considered armed and dangerous.
