Former President Donald Trump wanted to buy a handgun with his face emblazoned on it – but was not able to because he faces felony counts from four indictments.
Trump eyed a bronze-colored Glock pistol with his image on the handle and ‘Trump’, ’45th’ and a presidential seal, while making an unscheduled campaign stop at the Palmetto State Armory in Columbia, South Carolina.
‘Wow. I’ve got to buy one. I want to buy one,’ Trump said on Monday as he was presented with the gun, in a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) by his spokesman Steven Cheung.
The individual clutching the gun replies briefly replied, then Trump reiterated, ‘No, I want to buy one.’
Cheung wrote: ‘President Trump purchases a @GLOCKInc in South Carolina!’
But the spokesperson quickly deleted the post, likely after realizing that it would be a crime for Trump to purchase the firearm since he faces 91 felony counts across four separate criminal cases.
Federal law prohibits individuals under indictment from purchasing a firearm.
Cheung told CNN that Trump did not actually buy the Glock while visiting the armory.
Trump was accompanied in the visit by Republican congresswoman and avid supporter Marjorie Taylor Greene.
‘President Trump doing a little shopping in South Carolina!’ she said before the Trump campaign’s clarification. ‘He will protect our great Second Amendment!!’
The former president continued his day by holding a rally in Summerville, a suburb of Charleston.
Trump has long acknowledged that he has a concealed carry permit and in a 2015 Republican presidential debate admitted, ‘I do carry on occasion, sometimes a lot. But I like to be unpredictable.’
The ex-president, who has a clear lead over his challengers, will skip the second 2024 Republican primary debate on Wednesday night and instead hold a rally with automobile industry workers striking in Michigan.
Trump has pleaded not guilty to all the charges across his four indictments.
