Former President Donald Trump called his predecessor Joe Biden ‘dumb as a rock’ for a prisoner swap that unfreezes $6billion in Iranian assets.
Trump blasted President Biden on Monday as five Americans hostages were freed from Iranian prisons in exchange for clemency for five Iranians and unfreezing billions in oil funds.
The ex-president bragged about his own work in freeing hostages while president, and contrasted it to Biden’s latest deal.
‘I brought 58 HOSTAGES home from many different countries, including North Korea, and I never paid anything. They all understood they MUST LET THESE PEOPLE COME HOME!’ Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
He continued that it got to the point that ‘countries didn’t even start the conversation asking for money, because they knew they would not get it’.
‘Once you pay, you always pay, & MANY MORE HOSTAGES WILL BE TAKEN. Our grossly incompetent “leader,” Crooked Joe Biden, gave 6 BILLION DOLLARS for 5 people. Iran gave ZERO for 5,’ Trump wrote.
‘He’s Dumb as a ROCK!’
The Biden administration stated that the deal around the $6billion was not a ransom and that includes no American taxpayer money. The administration said there are ‘guardrails’ around how Iran can spend the funds.
After the freed American prisoners landed in Qatar on the way to the US, Biden stated: ‘Today, five innocent Americans who were imprisoned in Iran are finally coming home.’
But many Republicans shared the same or similar view of the prisoner swap as Trump.
‘Two of the five Iranians released as part of this terrible deal will stay in the U.S.,’ wrote Republican Senator Tom Cotton on X (formerly Twitter). ‘Joe Biden’s embarrassing appeasement not only makes Iran stronger, it makes America less safe.’
It is not the first time that Trump has called Biden ‘dumb as a rock’.
In private remarks to US diplomats in New York in September 2019, then-President Trump said: ‘Then you have Sleepy Joe Biden, who’s dumb as a rock. This guy was dumb on his best day, and he’s not having his best day right now. He’s dumb as a rock.’
