A 14-year-old boy has died in hospital after he was stabbed in Manchester – with another teenager arrested on suspicion of his murder.
The youngster was knifed in Tavistock Square in Harpurhey on Friday evening.
Emergency services rushed to the scene shortly after 6pm and he was taken to hospital but he could not be saved.
His next of kin have been informed and police say they are being supported by family liaison officers at ‘this incredibly difficult time’.
Another boy, also aged 14, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is being questioned by police in custody.
A crime scene remains in place and Greater Manchester Police have also imposed a Section 60 authority in the area, allowing officers additional powers to stop and search people.
The increased measures will remain in place until 8.26pm on Saturday.
Forensic investigators were pictured investigating throughout the evening on Friday and a blue tent had been erected.
Detective Superintendent Phil Key said: ‘Firstly I would like to share my deepest condolences with the family at this unbelievably difficult time.
‘Our family liaison officers are currently working with them and we will continue to support the family throughout this extremely troubling period.
‘A Section 60 authority has been put in place which will run for 24 hours and finish at 8.26pm this evening.
‘We have taken this course of action to keep the public who live and work within the vicinity of the incident safe.
‘We understand the use of a Section 60 can cause concern to local residents; however, we use these powers only when proportionate and necessary.
‘By enforcing the Section 60 in the area, we will work to minimise any violent behaviour and prevent any further serious incidents going forward as our main priority is to keep the public safe.’
Police are also urging anyone who has dashcam, CCTV or doorbell footage from the area to come forward.
It’s the latest in a string of young teenagers tragically falling victim to knife crime in the UK this year.
In July, a 16-year-old boy was stabbed to death in Stourbridge and a 17-year-old was killed after a birthday party in London.
A boy, 16, is also facing life in prison after he admitted murdering another pupil at an end-of-term bash.
