A University in North Carolina has been placed on lockdown over reports of a gunman.
‘Police report an Armed and Dangerous Person On or Near Campus,’ states an alert issued shortly after 1pm Monday by law enforcement and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Cops are urging students and staff to immediately go indoors and close doors and windows until further instruction.
Police are investigating the area across the street from the Morehead-Patterson Bell Tower, along South Road close to Caudill Labs, WTVD reported.
Shots were fired on campus, sources told WRAL.
On lockdown in my office with staff and colleagues. Active shooter somewhere nearby. Perhaps near genome sciences. I heard that a student was shot.
UNC lecturer Noel Brewer wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that he was on lockdown in his office with his colleagues and that an ‘active shooter’ was ‘somewhere nearby’ and that he heard that a student had been shot.
Authorities did not immediately say whether it was an active shooter situation and if anyone had been shot.
All Chapel Hill-Carrboro Schools were also placed in secure mode, meaning locking all building doors, according to WTVD.
A large police presence was on campus and cops could be seen with their guns drawn, according to WNCN.
