Temperatures in the UK are on track to soar higher than those in California next week – but only after another period of heavy rain.
High pressure and tropical air is set to build after rainfall on Sunday evening and into Monday, meaning South East England could reach 32C on Friday, compared to just 26C in Los Angeles.
The initial downpour may even see the Met Office issue a weather warning for parts of North Wales, where two inches (about half a month’s worth) of rain is set to fall on Monday alone.
Forecaster Dan Stroud said: ‘We are looking at the possibility of reaching the low 30s later in the week, most likely on Friday, probably in and around London, running into East Anglia and other parts of the South and East.
‘We’ve got low pressure dominating at the moment, that will eventually give way to another area of heavy rain and cloud which will move up from the South and West into Monday, which will be a miserable and wet day across England and Wales.’
He went on: ‘Beyond that, there are tentative signs of an improvement, gradually losing that showery signal during Tuesday and Wednesday, and temperatures will start to climb.
‘We’ve got high pressure building from the middle of the week and that will tap into some tropical continental air, which will draw up some very warm, locally hot air that will allow temperatures to climb steadily.’
He added: ‘By the time we get into Friday and maybe into Saturday we stand a chance of breaking into the 30s.’
Other parts of the country will also likely prove hot on Friday, with large parts of England and Wales expected to surpass 25C.
Scotland and Northern Ireland meanwhile may reach the low-to-mid 20s.
The Met Office also says that many areas may continue to experience thundery showers later in the week.
Mr Stroud added that the heat is likely to prove short-lived, with low pressure likely to make for a more settled spell over next weekend.
