Rail strikes return bringing travel misery for millions – but which trains are affected by today’s walkout?

More travel misery is set to strike millions over the next few weeks with a fresh round of rail strikes set to paralyse the network.

The latest industrial action will see members of the RMT Union walk out today, Saturday August 26 as well as next Saturday, September 2.

Several rail trade unions have been taking industrial action over pay, job security, and working conditions, including the proposal for scrapping staffed booking offices and the introduction of driver-only trains.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch has said the union had to call more strike action as they have ‘received no improved or revised offer from the Rail Delivery Group.’

14 train operating companies are set to be affected by the strike:

Chiltern Railways

Chiltern has said an amended timetable will operate today – but have warned they will have a very limited service and advise against all but essential travel.

Cross Country Trains

Those planning a journey on Cross Country Trains should keep an eye on their industrial action page for service updates, and advise passengers to check before they travel.

They also advise that the service on Sunday will also be affected.

Greater Anglia

Greater Anglia have said on their website that ‘services will operate between 07.00 and 23.00, with all last trains reaching their destination by 23.00.

Some routes will have a near-normal service while others will run a reduced service. Short-notice cancellations may also occur.

LNER

Check the LNER industrial action page for details of which services are still running and which have been cancelled.

East Midlands Railway

East Midlands Railway will operate a significant reduced service on strike day and advise passengers only to travel if absolutely necessary.

Services will also start later and finish earlier than usual. You can find out more information at their industrial action page.

c2c have said services will not be massively impacted today but you should check before you travel.

Great Western Railway

GWR will operate a revised timetable with services starting later and finishing earlier, while many routes will have no service at all. They have also warned those trains that are running are likely to be much more busy than usual.

Those travelling from the Reading Festival should also note there will be no late night service tonight.

Northern Trains

A small number of routes will have a very limited train service between 8am and 5pm, while many routes will have no service at all and many stations served by Northern Trains will be closed altogether.

South Eastern

South Eastern will only be able to run a limited service with some routes closed completely.

South Western Railway

South Western has said it will run a significantly reduced service between 7am and 7pm.

Customers are advised only to travel if necessary and to check their journeys using journey planners beforehand.

Transpennine Express

Transpennine Express has said it will run the following routes:

  • Manchester Piccadilly to Scarborough
    Between Manchester Piccadilly and York: 6 local services, 3 semi-fast services (towards Manchester Piccadilly), 4 semi-fast services (towards York)
    Between York and Scarborough: 6 services
  • Preston to Manchester Airport
    In both directions: 5 services
  • Sheffield to Cleethorpes
    In both directions: 5 services

Avanti West Coast

Avanti has said they will run a significantly reduced service which will start later and finish earlier than usual, and that services are likely to be very busy.

They advise passengers to check before they travel whether their train is running.

West Midlands Trains

West Midlands Trains will operate a limited service between 7am and 7pm only and some routes will not run at all.

They advise you to check your journey in advance before you set off.

GTR (including Gatwick Express)

A limited service will run across the network with later start and earlier finish times.

The usual non-stop Gatwick Express service between London Victoria, Gatwick Airport and Brighton will not run.

As a result extra stops will be added at East Croydon and Clapham Junction, which will be run as Southern services.

Gatwick Express tickets will be valid on Southern and Thameslink services.
