Police had to smash a window to rescue a dog who had been left inside a locked campervan for three days.
Greater Manchester Police were called this afternoon over concerns for the welfare of the golden retriever. Callers said there weren’t any windows open and nobody had been seen in or around the van.
The poor dog was seen sitting in the driver’s seat, looking dejected and uncomfortable, when police arrived.
An officer had to break a window to pull him out of the campervan.
It’s not known exactly how long the dog had been left in the campervan alone, but it had been parked in the area for three days before police were called.
The dog is being cared for at one of the force’s rescue centres, while officers try to trace the owner.
Chief Inspector Chris Boyd said: ‘It is just not acceptable to allow a dog to be in a vehicle on their own for even a couple of hours, let alone three days.
‘When we found him, there were no open windows and, with it being quite warm today, this could have ended up a disaster.
‘Dogs don’t respond to the heat like humans do and as such, this lovely dog could have overheated.
‘Even leaving a window open or a bowl of water is not good enough. Just don’t leave your dog on it’s own in a vehicle.
‘If you are planning on being away from your vehicle, then don’t take the risk and leave your dog at home.’
The RSPCA and other animal charities have long campaigned and provided education about the dangers of leaving dogs alone in hot cars.
Even if the vehicle is parked in the shade or the windows are open, cars can still get extremely hot inside which will cause suffering and harm to the dog.
