A controversial curch believes Hawaii will be ‘utterly destroyed’ on Sunday because of sin.

The infamous US Westboro Baptist Church, based in Kansas, revealed its theory on Friday.

They said in a statement: ‘The watchman who were appointed in providence to warn the inhabitants of Hawaii utterly failed!

‘Instead of warning against sin and death, they have championed the cause of idolatry, fornication, adultery, sodomy, pride – every behaviour God called abominable and swore would bring destruction.

‘The warning having failed, soon comes the judgement. A shaking of heaven and earth so severe, the islands will be literally undone – the people will perish.’

They quoted Revelation 6:14, which says: ‘And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.’

The church has planned protests at three places of worship in Hawaii – Grace Bible Church and King’s Cathedral in Kahului and Wailuku Union Church in Wailuku.

Westboro was founded by pastor Fred Phelps in 1955 and has been called a ‘cult’ by several human rights groups.

Members are known to hold protests outside military funerals holding signs which read: ‘Thank God for Dead Soldiers.’

They believe God is punishing the US for homosexuality, with the website saying: ‘Where in God’s name did he get the idea that it was noble to fight in a f** army for a f** nation that’s on the short path to eternal destruction?’

Westboro even planned to picket outside Sandy Hook Elementary School, in Newtown, Connecticut, after a shooting killed 28 people, including 20 children – all aged six and seven – in 2012.

They said they would offer praise to God for ‘executing his judgement’.

Several states have imposed restrictions on demonstrations at funerals because of Westboro.

The church is not affiliated with any recognised Baptist denomination and many members of the Christian community have denounced the group.
