Lori Vallow Daybell’s hair was found on a piece of duct tape used to wrap her murdered son’s body up, an investigator testified.
Vallow, the so-called ‘doomsday cult mom,’ is currently on trial in Idaho for the murder of her children Tylee Ryan, 16, Joshua ‘JJ’ Vallow, 7, in June 2020.
Vallow and her husband, Chad Daybell, were charged with first-degree murder in May 2021 after the children’s remains were discovered on Daybell’s property.
Court proceedings continued on Monday as investigators testified for the prosecution about evidence collected during the long investigation.
Vallow’s son, JJ, was found in a black plastic trash bag bound by several rolls of duct tape. According to investigators, one of Vallow’s hairs was found on roll a piece of duct tape recovered from the body.
Keeley Coleman, a senior DNA analyst at Bode Technologies, testified in court on Monday that the hair found on the tape matches Vallow’s DNA.
Coleman testified that she was certain about the match. ‘The probability of randomly selecting a random individual in relation to that profile 1 is 71 billion,’ she told the court.
Earlier last week, Dr Garth Warren of the Ada County Coroner’s Office revealed to the court JJ’s cause of death.
According to the coroner, JJ died by ‘asphyxia by plastic bag over the head and duct tape over the mouth.’ The coroner also said that scratches found on the child’s neck were self-inflicted as he desperately tried to survive the suffocation.
Jurors previously heard testimony from Vallow’s only surviving child, 27-year-old Colby Ryan, who told his mother ‘you murdered my siblings’ in a recorded phone call that was played for the court.
‘My siblings, my whole family, my dad — everyone is gone except my mom and you’re in jail because of it,’ the grieving son told his mother.
