A man who was speeding and suspected of drunk driving apparently tried to trade places with his dog in order to avoid getting arrested.
He was pulled over around 11.30pm on Saturday after allegedly driving 52mph in a 30mph zone in Springfield, Colorado.
‘The driver attempted to switch places with his dog who was in the passenger seat, as the SPD officer approached and watched the entire process,’ stated the Springfield Police Department on Facebook on Sunday. ‘The male party then exited the passenger side of the vehicle and claimed he was not driving.’
He ‘showed clear signs of intoxication’ and ran from the officer when asked about how much alcohol he had consumed, according to the police department.
The man was taken into custody within 20 yards of his car.
Law enforcement officials made a light-hearted comment about the man’s best friend.
‘The dog was given to an acquaintance of the driver to take care of while the party was in jail,’ wrote the police department. ‘The dog does not face any charges and was let go with just a warning.’
Its owner, meanwhile, was taken to a hospital and after being medically cleared, was booked into the Baca County Jail. The man, whose identity has not been released, had two active warrants for his arrest from Pueblo, where he was driving to from Las Animas. However, he got lost in Springfield, where he subjected to the traffic stop near 6th and Main streets.
The man has been charge with driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, driving with impaired ability, driving under suspension, resisting arrest and speeding 20mph to 25mph over the limit. He was also put behind bars for his outstanding warrants.
Many Facebook users cracked dog-related jokes. One user shared an image of a dog having a mugshot taken, with the remark, ‘I was framed officer…’
Another user said the driver ‘was too drunk to use a GPS so he got a guide dog’.
‘I’d pay money to watch the dash and body cam of this whole thing,’ another user wrote.
