Ex-President Donald Trump’s long-perceived top Republican rival for the 2024 election has filed paperwork to run for president.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis filed his declaration of candidacy for president with the Federal Election Commission on Wednesday afternoon.
DeSantis’ filing came more than three hours before he was expected to formally announce his bid in a Twitter Spaces event with the social media company’s boss Elon Musk at 6pm ET. DeSantis has reportedly chosen to have an online conversation with Musk, instead of announcing on Fox News.
The filing allows DeSantis to start legally fundraising for his 2024 campaign.
Trump, who has enjoyed being the frontrunner for the GOP nomination, attacked DeSantis early on Tuesday on his Truth Social platform.
‘Ron DeSanctus can’t win the General Election (or get the Nomination) because he VOTED TO OBLITERATE SOCIAL SECURITY, EVEN WANTING TO RAISE THE MINIMUM AGE TO 70 (or more!), VOTED TO BADLY WOUND MEDICARE, AND FOUGHT HARD AND VOTED FOR A 23% “TAX ON EVERYTHING” SALES TAX,’ wrote Trump in one of numerous posts.
‘Also, he desperately needs a personality transplant and, to the best of my knowledge, they are not medically available yet. A disloyal person!’
Trump filed his paperwork for candidacy on the same night that he announced his 2024 bid in November from his Mar-a-Lago home. Another Republican candidate, Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, filed his paperwork on Friday and formally announced on Monday.
Last Thursday, reports emerged that DeSantis would likely file his paperwork on May 25 and would formally launch his campaign the week of May 29. He did so before those dates.
DeSantis sailed to reelection in Florida last year after challenging coronavirus protocols and pushing his conservative agenda on issues in the state including race, education and gender. He has gained endorsements from Florida’s top two GOP legislative leaders and state representatives from New Hampshire.
