Google has made it clear that AI is on top of its agenda lately, as it appears to be playing catch up with Microsoft and OpenAI.
Last December, the company’s research, trust and safety division teams were been directed to focus on the development and launch of new AI prototypes and products.
All eyes are on tomorrow’s Google I/O, the company’s annual conference to showcase its latest innovations, for a glimpse of any exciting AI offerings from the tech giant.
Here are some of the AI updates we can expect to see:
PaLM 2
According to internal documents about Google I/O viewed by CNBC, the company will unveil a new general-use large language model called PaLM 2.
Google first announced PaLM in April 2022. The latest and more advanced LLM reportedly includes over 100 languages and has been operating under the internal codename ‘Unified Language Model’.
It can also allegedly perform a range of coding and math tests as well as creative writing tests and analysis.
Last month, Google said its medical LLM called ‘Med-PaLM 2’ can answer medical exam questions with an 85% accuracy.
A smarter Bard
It’s likely Google will share advancements to ‘generative experiences’ in Bard.
According to reports, Bard will have the ability to code, perform math and ‘logic’ as well as work in Japanese and Korean.
The company has also reportedly tested versions called ‘Big Bard’ and ‘Giant Bard’ which use a larger data set and solve complex math and coding programs.
Either way, as long as Bard doesn’t mess up the demo like last time, costing Google £1billion.
AI-powered Google Workspace
Google is expected to expand its ‘Workspace AI collaborator’ to include template generation in Sheets and image generation in its Slides and Meet.
In March, the company said it was testing AI capabilities in Gmail and Google with a small number of users.
One image, viewed by CNBC, showed a Slides sidebar with a chat box that allowed a user to enter text with the option to ‘create’ an image based on text prompts.
Updated image and voice search
Last year, the company allowed users to ask questions about what they’re viewing in images with multi-search in Google Lens. This could be updated to include use cases.
Google Assistant could also use an AI update ahead of Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa.
Earlier this year, Amazon’s CEO Andy Jassy announced that the company is working on a large language model to power Alexa.
