At least 12 states across the center of the United States prepared for tornadoes on Monday as the death toll from the weekend’s storms rose to 32.

More than 50 tornadoes spawned across the country over the weekend, and more are expected this week.

The epicenter of Monday and Tuesday’s storms will be in the Midwest, forecasters at the National Weather Service (NWS) said. Large portions of Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, and Arkansas face a ‘moderate’ risk of tornadoes as more dangerous storms roll across the region.

A severe weather alert and tornado watch were also declared in the northern Florida panhandle, southwest Georgia, and southeast Alabama on Monday around noon.

The region is expected to be hit with large hail and 70 mile per hour wind gusts, which could result in ‘spin-up tornadoes’ around the region, which includes Florida’s capitol city of Tallahassee.

The storm is expected to lose strength as it approaches the Atlantic coast, posing a lesser threat to Florida’s largest city of Jacksonville.

Tuesday’s storms are expected to hit some regions already experiencing some of the worst destruction from last weekend’s storms.

Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed that five people were found dead in the state. Four of those deaths were located in Wynne, a town in the state’s northeastern Cross County.

Sanders had already declared a state of emergency and requested federal aid from the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency

Further east, state police in Delaware confirmed that a tornado killed one person and inflicted heavy damage to homes in the small town of Bridgeville.

President Joe Biden toured some of the areas hard hit by storms last Friday, including Rolling Fork, Mississippi, where he called the destruction ‘devastating.’

‘There’s nothing we can do to heal the hole left in the hearts of far too many families who lost loved ones this weekend, but we will be there every step of the way as they rebuild and recover,’ the president said days later.
